The White Sands of Vada

Spiagge Bianche Vada

The coast of Rosignano Solvay is caractherized by wide shores with modern beach resorts.

Set along the coast between Rosignano Solvay and Vada, the so-called "White Sands" ("spiagge bianche") are particularly known.

There you could find a very white strip, about 4 km. in length. In the "Lillatro" beach resort, you may partake in sailing, windsurfing or kitesurfing lessons or many others activities, organized by "WindSurf Gorette Club".

Cala del Leone

This famous creeek is situated between the relief of Romito with pools of sea water and sandy pebbled areas.

This area is closed from the south by the headland on which the imposing mass of the Castello Sonnino stands, a building in neo-medieval style dating back to the end of the 8th century, when the Baron Sidney Sonnino decided to set up home here.

In this suggestive bay, during the summer period, boats of every type moor here and the beach is then the destination of many young people who have chosen this hidden rocky area as the oasis for their relaxation.

Baratti Gulf

Golfo di Baratti

Here you find not only wonderful water that is calm even when the sea is rough but also Etruscan ruins nearby, and a medieval fortress up above.

Great for the quite soft beaches, it is nestled under Populonia, a spectacular promontory about 70 km south of Livorno; it's shielded from the sea and calm.

Populonia has dozens of tiny inlets that can only be reached by boat.

It's a sun-worshiper's paradise, and also a diver's - you may even find something Etruscan under the waves, because Baratti is where the Etruscans smelted the iron ore they mined on Elba, and their transport ships did occasionally sink.

Buca delle Fate

This is a beach area of footpaths, one of the few which can be reached by land, where the paths meet along the rocky coastline between the Piombino headland and that of Populonia.

The sea waters and the rocky sea bed is sheltered from the winds. To reach the area you must take the road which leads from the Baratti Gulf to Populonia.

Before reaching the sight to the small tower of this village, park the car and follow the small but well indicated footpath which passes through the scrubland. The rapid rocky coastline starts after you have descended for about 20 minutes and it leads directly to the sea.
